Privacy, by design.
Whenlit helps you plan for sunlight, weather and photo opportunities. We prioritize on-device storage and use system services for the features you choose.
1. Location and weather
With your permission, Whenlit uses your device's location to calculate solar and lunar positions, provide directional guidance and request local forecasts. You can deny permission and choose a city instead. We do not continuously track your location in the background. With Pro, iOS may briefly refresh the forecast for your currently selected place in the background; this sends that place's saved coordinates to WeatherKit and does not read your location. If a place name cannot be looked up, Whenlit uses a city list built into the app to estimate the local time zone on your device. Selected and recent places may be stored on your device.
Place searches and geocoding use Apple's MapKit and location services. Standard production weather queries use Apple WeatherKit, which receives the requested coordinates and forecast time range. Some development or alternate builds may use Open-Meteo, which receives the requested coordinates and forecast parameters. These services handle requests under their own privacy policies.
2. Camera, compass, motion and Photos
The optional AR view uses the camera, compass and device orientation to overlay a solar path on a live view. Whenlit does not record or upload camera photos or videos for this feature.
If you tap “Save Image” when sharing, iOS asks for add-only access to Photos so the share card can be saved. Whenlit never reads, browses or uploads your photo library.
3. On-device information
Favorites, recently selected places, shooting plans, reminders, app preferences and a limited weather cache are saved locally on your device. Necessary data may be shared with Whenlit widgets and a paired Apple Watch using Apple's device-sharing technologies. Operating-system backups may handle app data separately.
4. Purchases
Apple StoreKit handles purchases, subscriptions, renewals and transaction verification. Whenlit reads verified purchase and subscription status to enable Pro access. We do not receive payment card details.
5. Sharing
If you choose to share a plan, the exported image includes the place name, a map of the area, the date and time, sun direction and light timing, and the light score. Shared images do not include weather. Shared content is sent through the iOS share sheet. Anyone receiving a link or image may see that information. Whenlit cannot revoke information already shared through another service.
6. Feedback you send
If you choose to send feedback from Settings, Whenlit sends your message, optional reply email, app version and build, system version, device model, app language and Free/Pro status to our Cloudflare Worker and D1 database. No location, saved places or plans are automatically attached. Please avoid including information you do not want to share in the message. Feedback sent through the feedback form on this website is handled as described in the website privacy notice.
We use feedback to investigate problems and improve Whenlit, and use an email you provide only to respond. Cloudflare processes technical connection information to deliver and protect requests. Our feedback database stores a salted hash of the connecting IP for rate limiting, rather than the raw IP. Access to feedback is password-protected. Feedback remains until removed by the operator; contact us below to request deletion, providing enough details to identify your message.
7. Sunrise and sunset answers
After a sunrise or sunset, Whenlit may ask how the sky looked. Answering is optional and takes one tap; you can close the question instead. When you answer, Whenlit sends your answer together with the event (sunrise or sunset) and its time, an approximate area rounded to about 5 km, the time zone, the forecast score and weather values you were shown (such as cloud cover and precipitation chance), the forecast model version, app version and app language to our Cloudflare Worker and D1 database. It does not send your exact location, an account, a device identifier, saved places or plans.
We use these answers to measure and improve the accuracy of Whenlit's light forecasts. Our database stores a salted hash of the connecting IP only to limit abuse and duplicate answers, not the raw IP. You can turn off “Help improve glow forecasts” in Settings; your answers then stay on your device only. We keep answers for up to two years and then delete them or keep only totals that cannot identify an area or a person.
8. Analytics, advertising and third-party services
The current app configuration does not require a Whenlit account, include advertising SDKs or third-party analytics, or upload your saved plans to a Whenlit-operated cloud account. We do not use your information for cross-app advertising tracking.
Apple provides mapping, WeatherKit, StoreKit and other system services; see Apple's Privacy Policy. Other builds may query Open-Meteo.
This site is hosted by Cloudflare Pages. Cloudflare may process technical connection information, such as an IP address, to deliver and protect the website; see Cloudflare's Privacy Policy. We have not added analytics scripts, advertising tags or tracking cookies to this site.
9. Your controls and retention
Manage location, camera, motion and notification permissions in iOS Settings. You can choose a city without granting location permission and delete saved places or plans in the app. Locally saved information typically remains until you delete it or uninstall Whenlit. Temporary weather caches are periodically replaced or removed. OS backups and information you share externally follow separate retention rules.
10. Changes and contact
We may update this policy as features or data practices change; the effective date will be revised. For questions about privacy or your data, contact us at pandafeeeder@gmail.com. For help using the app, see Support.
